This web map shows the origins of Rock artists whose albums were successful between 1964 and 2011.
The data was compiled from the top 100 positions of the Billboard 200 album charts for each year.
The circles are centered on the cities where the artists of these successful albums came from.
The circle sizes are proportional to the number of albums that made the charts in that year.
Placing your mouse pointer over a circle will reveal the name of the city and the number of albums that made the charts.
You can use the controls below the map to play, pause, advance and rewind the time-slider, or you can click and drag the button on the time-slider
to the desired year, which is shown on the bottom left of the map.
In the top right corner of the map you can change the style of the basemap, and also view what parts of the world are in day or night, in real time!
This map was made with a combination of my own code and open-source code that others created. Attribution and licensing information can be found
